Field Experience
Rich, varied and extensive field experience is the hallmark of our school. New York has numerous opportunities for internships, student teaching and fieldwork to help you put theory into practice. Whether you are working with students on reading skills or learning the ropes in a clinical setting, your experience at Manhattan College ensures you are well-prepared for your career after graduation.
Each of these courses has a field experience component. In Reading in the Content Area and Language and Literacy you will spend 10 hours in a high school or middle school setting observing experienced practioners, analyzing lesson plans, and incorporating your course learning under the direction of the classroom teacher. In Methods in Secondary Education you will have 30 hours in the field observing and participating in middle and high school classrooms.
NYS requires teachers candidates to complete 100 field hours in addition to student teaching for initial certification. You will keep a documented log of your time and expereince. You may also be required to keep a journal of your field experience.
